Fall Celebration

Dear Keeler families,

As a public school, we recognize and acknowledge many cultures, holidays and customs.  Currently, over 30% of our school population are identified as speaking another language other than English at home.  While we don’t stop and celebrate each holiday at school, we do know the diverse number of holidays and customs that our collective school community embraces.  Halloween is one of these annual events that some of our families participate in.

Students are invited to bring a simple, non-violent (no weapons) costume that staff can identify them (no mask) to wear over their clothes on October 31.  Other options include wearing black and orange, wearing school spirit wear, or also not dressing up at all. The Grade 2's will have a fall celebration tomorrow afternoon.  Families are welcome to send nut free and kiwi free snacks.  Ms. McGill's class has 20 students and Mrs. Rahal's class has 21.

The Cold Weather Is Here!

Dear Parents,

It is very important that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, including hats, gloves, mittens, etc. We do not have enough clothing to lend out to students who need these items and we also do not have the staff to be able to supervise a lot of students inside on colder days over lunch and recess times. We will, however, have indoor recess and lunches when temperatures reach -20 Celsius or colder including wind-chill factor. Please see our guidelines below:

CBE Cold Weather Guidelines for On-Site Activities

When temperatures reach -20 Celsius or colder including the wind-chill factor, it is recommended that students be kept inside for recess or lunch breaks. The minus 20 Celsius guideline is comparable to other school jurisdictions in Alberta and across Canada.
note | this temperature is provided as a guideline and may be adjusted for the school/activity.

Thank you!

Fantastic Fall Break/Learning Update

Hello Grade 2 Families,

We hope that your fall break has been wonderful and restful.  As we (Ms. McGill & Ms. Rahal) think about next week, we want to update you on all the wonderful learning from the past 2 weeks and what will be coming after the break!

By the end of last week your child should have been able to:

Math:
  • Identify how many tens and ones there are in a given number, and represent that number in various ways.  For example...
    •  Pictorally: Represent a number using the new strategy we learned (see image).  The purpose of this new strategy is to allow students to complete this task more efficiently.
    • Concretely: Represent a number using the tens and ones blocks.  We found that most of our students needed practice counting by tens.  The tens blocks help with this because the students can pick one up and see that it has ten as they count!
Social Studies
  • Explain what a body of water is, and identify the various types of bodies of water that are found across Canada, including rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans.
Science
  • Tell you which items are attracted to magnets and which items are repelled by magnets, including that magnets attract and repel to and against each other.
Literacy
Coming up after the break:
  • We will be transitioning away from our current spelling tests and towards literacy groups.  The grade 1s and 2s will be split between Ms. Genno, Ms. Gibb, Ms. Rahal, & Ms. McGill.  Students will be placed in a group with one of the above teachers based on their ability to identify letter sounds and decode words.  Within these groups, the students will be given the opportunity to practice reading and spelling words with the sounds that are being focused on for that week!  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Practicing our basic math facts using linear measurement!

September Principal Message

Dear Keeler parents and/or guardians,

Please see our September principal message below.  A reminder that after FALL BREAK:

  • Grade blogs will focus on classroom learning and updates (Will be updated weekly)
  • School messenger will contain information and reminders that impact (non-commercial messages ONLY)
  • School Twitter will be used to share learning, activities, events, etc at Keeler.
  • School website (updated daily) & principals message (monthly)

These forms of communication do not replace phone calls or face to face meetings. These are still important means of addressing concerns or questions you may have regarding your child. We encourage you to reach out to your classroom teacher should you require more personalized and specific communication.

With our modified calendar, by September’s end, we have already put in nearly seven weeks of learning with our students. The students and staff have been very engaged and we are off to a great start in our 2019-2020 school year. Our focus at Keeler School remains around student learning. Our students’ purpose for coming here is to learn. We learn not only in the classroom, but also in the hallway, the playground, the lunchroom, offsite and everywhere in between! We are about all learning!

There has been so much going at Keeler already but a few highlights include our music therapy program with our EDC students, grade 3 & 5 fish creek field studies, Relay Education coming to work with our grade 4’s on wind turbines, Terry Fox run, Orange shirt day and the start of our Circle of Courage assembly’s.  Please go to your classroom blog and school twitter for more updates and stories:
