Safety Precautions at Keeler School

Good Afternoon Keeler Families,

Safety Precautions at Keeler School

The safety of all students and staff at Keeler School is of great importance. As such, we have established appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our staff and students. Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. Teachers keep class lists with them during all drills and attendance is always taken. Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded.
It is a reflection of the changes in our society that we must add variations to our safety drills. Today, February 25, 2020 we practiced a drill known as a "lockdown". The teachers instructed students of their role during a drill of this kind. All students were prepared and understood that this was a practice. No one is allowed to enter or leave the building during a lockdown procedure. Members of the Calgary Police Service were present today to assist with this practice and provide feedback.
As we continue to refine our school safety procedures, other safety precautions we continue to have in place include:
  • Locking all doors
  • Walkie Talkies - for communication when children are out in the school field
  • A Fan Out Procedure using School Messenger has been established to ensure clear and swift communication with parents in the event of an emergency
  • Visitors - are expected to register at the office
  • Volunteers - must complete a security clearance and sing in at the office and wear nametags at all times
  • Substitute Teachers - are provided with emergency information upon entering the school

Staff members are trained in first aid and have thoroughly reviewed emergency plans with the children. We appreciate your support.

If you have any concerns or questions please contact the office.

Thank you,
Keeler School

Reminders/Announcements

Upcoming Events and Reminders
**School Council, Spring/Class Pictures, Morning Drop-Off

Good Afternoon Keeler Families,

We just wanted to reach out and provide some reminders and upcoming changes happening at Keeler.

School council meeting Wednesday February 26th at 6:00pm

Class and Spring pictures are on Wednesday February 26th.

Front doors open at 8:00am - please ensure your child is not at school before this time as we do not have the capacity to supervise prior to 8:00am
Starting April 6th, we will be implementing a new entry door for students who wish to participate in the Breakfast Program. Students will only be able to gain access through the South Door (by the park). If your child comes to the front door they will be kindly reminded to go around to the south door entrance.
To ensure the safety of our staff, students and parents, PLEASE DO NOT PARK, drop off or pick-up in the parking lot. Our parking lot is very small and cannot facilitate drop offs or pick-ups during school hours. In recent weeks we have experienced multiple accidents which poses major safety concerns.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the office.

Thank you,

Keeler School

Reminders/Learning Update

Reminders/Learning Update

- No Running and Reading tomorrow.
- Philkids concert with the CPO tomorrow.  Please call the office with any questions.

Lastly, we are learning about insulators in Science.
So far, questions we have explored are:
1. What does an insulator do?
2. What are some good insulators?

This is where you come in!
As a class, we are gathering materials that make good insulators.  In approximately 2 weeks,  once we have gathered enough, we will be making our own insulator invention.

Some examples of insulators:
- glass (we will use this sparingly in our inventions)
- air
- plastic
- rubber
- porcelain
- wood
- styrofoam

Please start sending!

Learning Update

In Math last week, students in Ms. Rahal’s class constructed 3-D shapes and began comparing the differences between each of the objects.  In both classes, students chose 2 3-D shapes and described how they were the same or different.  Next week, students will spend more time comparing various 3-D shapes and will make a video on the similarities or differences of the 2 shapes they have decided to explore.
For their math centers, both classes were introduced to 2 new games to further their understanding of 3-D shapes.  For the first, students use clues described in the game to identify a shape.  For the second, students must play a game of "I Spy" where they spot objects around the room and identify their shape.

In Social Studies, both Grade 2 classes are going on a pretend trip to Meteghan, Nova Scotia!  Each student has created a travel journal to document this adventure.  For their first journal entry, students used the knowledge that they acquired from class discussions on the tourism industry and landscape of Nova Scotia, as well as their own research, to answer the question, "When you go to Nova Scotia, what do you hope to do?"  Some responses included, "swim in the ocean", "go zip lining", "eat lobster", and "go tidal bore rafting".

In Art, students created their own trees and used various medias to complete the task. They started with a directed drawing of a tree, and used oil pastel to color the tree.  Next, students identified the difference between warm and cool colors, and used acrylic paint to color in the landscape behind the tree.

For Science, both grade 2 classes began to have conversations surrounding the question, "What makes a good insulator?".  Over the next week or so, students will continue to explore what materials are insulators and conductors and how they work in the environment.

Music: As we are sure you already know,  we went on a field trip to the Jack Singer Concert Hall!  Keeler students watched a performance by the CPO and students from the Alberta Ballet School.  Following the concert, we discussed what instruments the students saw and what instrument family they belong to.
