Learning Update

In Math last week, students in Ms. Rahal’s class constructed 3-D shapes and began comparing the differences between each of the objects.  In both classes, students chose 2 3-D shapes and described how they were the same or different.  Next week, students will spend more time comparing various 3-D shapes and will make a video on the similarities or differences of the 2 shapes they have decided to explore.
For their math centers, both classes were introduced to 2 new games to further their understanding of 3-D shapes.  For the first, students use clues described in the game to identify a shape.  For the second, students must play a game of "I Spy" where they spot objects around the room and identify their shape.

In Social Studies, both Grade 2 classes are going on a pretend trip to Meteghan, Nova Scotia!  Each student has created a travel journal to document this adventure.  For their first journal entry, students used the knowledge that they acquired from class discussions on the tourism industry and landscape of Nova Scotia, as well as their own research, to answer the question, "When you go to Nova Scotia, what do you hope to do?"  Some responses included, "swim in the ocean", "go zip lining", "eat lobster", and "go tidal bore rafting".

In Art, students created their own trees and used various medias to complete the task. They started with a directed drawing of a tree, and used oil pastel to color the tree.  Next, students identified the difference between warm and cool colors, and used acrylic paint to color in the landscape behind the tree.

For Science, both grade 2 classes began to have conversations surrounding the question, "What makes a good insulator?".  Over the next week or so, students will continue to explore what materials are insulators and conductors and how they work in the environment.

Music: As we are sure you already know,  we went on a field trip to the Jack Singer Concert Hall!  Keeler students watched a performance by the CPO and students from the Alberta Ballet School.  Following the concert, we discussed what instruments the students saw and what instrument family they belong to.
